Why we train the little ones what to do if they find an unsecured firearm.

One of the most important aspects of owning a firearm is having the mindset to always keep it from unauthorized and or untrained hands. If they are not in our immediate possession and or control, they need to be locked up. At T4Tactics we make sure to stress these facts when delivering the firearm safety, the Utah non-resident multi-state concealed permit, and the Virginia Concealed Permit Classes.
Below are some reasons why T4Tactics teaches the little ones what to do if they ever find an unsecured firearm.
· It prevents accidental injury and death. Young children don’t understand how firearms work; teaching them to stay away can stop a single moment of curiosity from becoming a tragedy.
· Kids act on impulse. Children are naturally curious and impulsive, especially boys; explicit training replaces curiosity with a safe, automatic response.
· It reduces lifelong trauma. Preventing a shooting or an accident avoids physical harm and the long-lasting emotional and mental trauma for the child, their family, and witnesses. Criminal and civil charges can follow as well.
· It protects other children and adults nearby. A child who knows what to do can remove themselves and alert an adult before someone else gets hurt.
· It reduces the chance a child will try to hide or move the gun. Many fatalities happen when children mishandle a weapon; rules like “don’t touch” stop risky attempts to hide or play with it.
· It creates a predictable response adults can rely on. Caregivers and first responders can act faster when a child follows a known safety script (e.g., “Stop — Don’t touch — Leave the area — Tell an responsible adult”).
· It lowers legal and safety liability for caregivers. Teaching and practicing safe behavior is a responsible step that helps protect families, hosts, and communities.
· It reinforces trusting adults and reporting. Teaching kids to “tell an adult right away” strengthens the habit of asking for help instead of hiding a dangerous situation.
· It breaks dangerous normalization. When children learn that guns are not toys and require adult handling along with proper training, it reduces the chance they’ll treat firearms like ordinary objects.
· It empowers children with simple, repeatable actions. A short, memorable plan gives kids confidence in an emergency and reduces panic — and confident kids make safer choices.
We don’t want our children to fear firearms but have an understanding that once at an appropriate age, they can be a great hobby, sport and a tool used for protection. If we are to have firearms in the house, of course the kids won’t have access, but will have an understanding working knowledge of how it will and will not hurt them or others.
Please always be safe, legal, reasonable and responsible gun owners.
